Worship Team -- Acolyte

  1. Please arrive at Church at least 20 minutes early. If you are not here at least 10 minutes prior to worship, we will find a replacement.
  2. Please select a robe and correctly colored cincture (rope belt).
  3. At the beginning of the service, light the candles. If the large Paschal candle is present up front, please light it also.
  4. Return to your place and participate during the worship service.
  5. At the time of the offering, please get the offering plates and take them to the ushers. Wait for the ushers to gather the offering and then place them in the cubby hole where the communion elements are stored.
  6. Please join the Assisting Minister and the Communion Assistants during the consecration of the elements.
  7. Help distribute Holy Communion.
    1. If we are communing by intinction, please hold the cup (chalice) of grape juice between the two communion assistants holding the cups of wine. The proper response to someone dipping their bread into the cup is "This is the blood of Christ shed for you." or  "The blood of Christ that was shed for you". The words themselves are not as important as the respectful tone and delivery of the words.
    2. If we are communing at the rail, please pick up the used cups using the lined baskets.
  8. After the worship service is over, please extinguish the candles and exit the church with grace and dignity.

Please Note:

  • While acolyting, you are representing the Church and giving holy service to our Lord. Please act appropriately while acolyting. Please pay attention to the worship service, because you are probably the first one that the Pastor or Assisting Minister will ask if they need help during the worship service.

  • When you approach or leave the altar area, it is customary to bow slightly to honor God. Looking someone directly in the eyes is one way of pronouncing your equality with them. Thus bowing is a way to acknowledge that you are someone's humble servant. You will notice that the Pastor, the Assisting Minister and all the adults also bow when approaching or leaving the altar area.
  • As someone helping with the worship service, it would be especially helpful if you would greet any visitors in your age bracket and invite them to the education hour. Your being friendly and inviting them to Youth Group or Confirmation might make all the difference in their returning to Church. YOU are our best ambassadors and evangelists to people your age. Please keep that in mind all the time but especially while you are acolyting.
  • Lastly, enjoy acolyting. It is a privilege and an honor to serve our Lord but it should also be a joy. The psalmist said "make a joyful noise to the Lord" not "be a grumpy goose and look like worship is painful." So relax, enjoy and be joyful about your service to the Lord.
