Aug 3 -- Decommissioning of the Original Buildings

On Sunday Aug 3, we gathered at the end of the worship service to decommission the original buildings. Having once been set aside or dedicated to God's use, they must be decommissioned before they can be torn down.

The service is quite simple. The congregation gathers for prayer and song as the items used in worship are withdrawn from the space:

  • The Pall -- used at memorial services and funerals
  • Hymnal -- to recall the music and choirs that sang here
  • Wedding Rings -- remembering the joy of weddings held within
  • Confirmation Cross -- recalling those who affirmed their faith
  • Chalice, Paten and Flagon -- thanking God for the many times Holy Communion was celebrated
  • Bible -- thanking God for the sermons preached
  • Bowl of Water -- recalling the Baptisms in this place
  • Candles -- reminder of Jesus declaring he is the Light of the World
  • Cross -- symbol of our faith

When all the symbols of the Church have been withdrawn, the Pastor asks that God withdraw His blessing, the doors are closed and locked with the key remaining in the lock to signify that we shall not return.

The table is set one last time.

It is still an active worship space.

We process into the original sanctuary from the current sanctuary.
